Imagining Afghanistan examines how Afghanistan has been imagined in literary and visual texts that were published after the 9/11 attacks and the subsequent U.S.-led invasion-the era that propelled Afghanistan into the center of global media visibility. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Phil is best known for his Merrily Watkins series of mysteries, featuring a down-to-earth female Church of England priest and exorcist, the first of which was The Wine of Angels. The novel ends with the couple’s divorce. Eventually Einstein and Maric get married and raise two sons while reshaping the entire field of physics - and drifting apart. They fall in love and have an affair she gets pregnant, flunks her exams - twice - and never completes her doctoral degree. The Other Einstein, a story told through letters, begins as Maric travels from her home in Serbia to study at the university in Zurich, Switzerland, where she soon meets fellow physics student Einstein. Fortunately, one of literature’s great perks is that it enables me to grapple with hard issues in a less stressful setting than politics. Truth has always been a tenuous commodity in politics, but its value currently seems to be at an all-time low. ![]() In part, the difficulty is a reflection of my struggle with today’s political climate. By the end, I was in an all-out battle with the boundaries of truth-stretching. Halfway through the book, though, I began to feel uneasy. Whatever it is, she struggles to accept her ordained life. Perhaps it's because of Taviana, the girl who has come to live with them and entertains Celeste with forbidden stories, or Jon, the young man she has clandestine meetings with, or maybe it's the influence of Craig, the outsider she meets on the beach. Celeste was born and raised in Unity, yet she struggles to fit in. Polygamy is the norm, strict obedience is expected and it is customary for young girls to be assigned to much older husbands. Range, a book about the value of being a generalist rather than a lifelong or career-long specialist, argues that many of the most effective people in elite professional fields (such as sports, art, and scientific research) succeed not despite the fact but because they find their way to that particular field after pursuing other endeavors first. And not just because his first child was born a few months before its publication. David Epstein’s new book, Range, isn’t about parenting per se, but Epstein thought a lot about parenting while he was writing it. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Besides telling the story of a woman desperately trying to ‘seduce’ her own husband, it also allows the reader glimpses into the workings of the Ghanaian society and the gigantic gap between the different socio-economic classes: while some live in tiny, modest houses with no plumbing, others own multiple estates, houses, shops, etc. Peace Adzo Medie’s His Only Wife is a real page-turner. As we know, things are usually not what they seem, and Afi’s naivete and innocence prevents her from even trying to face the truth. While we only see Afi’s perspective throughout the whole novel, I couldn’t help but wonder about the other woman, the one everyone says so many bad things about. It debates whether or not a man should (or could) have more than one wife (as it is customary in some African cultures) and whether a woman could (or would) accept a second place in her man’s romantic life. While I did find funny moments in the book that made me laugh out loud, I thought the book’s topic was actually quite serious. The only reason he agrees to marry our main character, Afi, is because his family won’t allow him to wed his other girlfriend. It takes the newlyweds a couple of weeks to meet in person because the man has a previous relationship he doesn’t want to give up. It is about a young woman who is married off to a very successful businessman, Elikem Ganyo in absentia – without him actually being present at the ceremony. ![]() So, apparently, His Only Wife by Peace Adzo Medie is considered a humorous book. ![]() ![]() ![]() It’s told in the voice of a 39-year-old genetics professor named Don Tillman, who has Asperger’s syndrome, a form of autism that affects his social skills.
